Homemade Crème de mûre


This post is part of a new series I am embarking on that I've titled "Booze Reviews". At this point I don't know what booze I'll be reviewing, but they'll be as occasional as all the other posts, so I apologise in advance for my sporadic posting.

The topic of this post is a delightful Crème de mûre that I have been making over the past week. It is a Blackberry Liqueur, quite low in alcohol, but very pleasant as a long drink over ice. The recipe, I must admit, is not my own, but can be found on the BBC GoodFood website here. It is a simple recipe of few ingredients; blackberries, red wine, and vodka. The only changes I'd recommend is using 200g of sugar, rather than the 500g in the recipe, as otherwise I feel it would be too sweet.

The wine I used to create it was a 2022 McGuigan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. I chose this as the label stated it was "full of blackberries" and had "hints of dark fruits", which would match well with the blackberries of the finished liqueur. I also chose it because it was on offer, and therefore was cheap. The vodka I chose was also inexpensive, but it was one step up from "Pure and Smooth", the cheap vodka that Sainsbury's sells. Whilst Pure and Smooth is on of my friends favourites, I could not bring myself to buy it for this: it's too similar to nail polish remover in my opinion. 

I have made this before in 2022, using fresh blackberries that I picked myself, but this time I used frozen berries. I don't know if this made any difference with the final drink. One thing that is different is that this second batch didn't come out as smooth as the first. Despite the same straining process, there is very fine fruit purée mixed throughout. Regardless of this, it drinks the same, and it will be perfect in the "Bootlegger" cocktail that I made it for. As I previously said, its pretty low alcohol for a liqueur, probably about 10% ABV; I've had three over the course of the evening whilst writing this, and I feel as sober as when I started!
